NEWS, Announcements and Personal Rants!

Come see us. (03/30/2005)

I was going to post this at the beginning of April and thought better of it knowing that there will always be a few that assume any announcement on the 1st of April is a joke so I am posting it early.

Now that April has arrived I just want to remind everyone that we will be at Penguicon in Novi, MI the 22-24th of April.

Drop into the game room and say Hi or better yet play some games with us. The game room will be open 24 hours throughout the convention so there is never a bad time to visit. There will be copies of Cannon in the games library and we will be teaching the rules and basic tactics to anyone who is interested, all you need to do is ask an attendant. If you are an experienced player we will try to match you with someone of your skill level.

We look forward to meeting you.

Improving Your Game. (01/22/2005)

For those of you looking to improve your skills in the game of Cannon we have added a tactical overview. Although reading this will not make you a master player overnight it includes several aspects of play that are not obvious to novice players. We hope it will be food for thought inspiring you to develop new strategies on your own. As always we welcome your input so if you have question or comments don’t hesitate to write us.

Happy New Year. (01/01/2005)

As promised here is the GTO Review

GTO (Game Table Online) is a pay service that provides Board, Card and Dice games in an unlimited play subscription format.

They currently have 8 games

  • Bosworth
  • Cosmic wimpout
  • Drakon
  • Igel Argern (HedgeHogs in a hurry)
  • Kill Dr Lucky
  • Lord of the Fries
  • Nuclear War
  • Vampire by Reiner Knizia

  • With a long list of games to be added including Tom Jolly Cargo, Euphat and Tigris and Wizwar. This brings us to the cost. Currently they have an introductory rate that is far below the cost of other pay to services. You can buy a year subscription for less than a big box game and play all you like. They have said that this rate will only last until they have 10 games available. With 2 games in Alpha it is not likely to last much longer.

What else do they have to offer?

There is a long list of subscription benefits most notably the GTO points that can be used to purchase table top versions of games and more play time. The points are earned in a number of ways. 10 points added automatically to your account every month. Raffles, contests and tournament prizes also can gain you points. Another way to earn points is by playing! Every time you have reached 100 plays in a given game (this is not as hard as it would seem) you earn 100 GTO points.

    13 is your Luck Number

The 13th of every month is free play day. Anyone with an account plays for free weather you are paying customer or not. A trial account is free! They hold a tournament on the 13 so it one of the best days of the month to play and every one is eligible to earn the prize GTO points.

    The GTO community

My experiences have been good with the players. All have been good sports, polite and generally fun to play against. As with any service there are the hard-core players who you will find online almost every day and are the ones you will be getting to know. The GTO staff is also often playing too (Gee what a hard job).

    The Drawbacks

Although I feel that GTO is a good deal they do have a few problems that I think keeps them from being the premium service that they could be.

Bugs - Some of the newer games are buggy and this affects game play and in turn that effects enjoyment. Losing a game because of a bug or getting kicked out because of it is frustrating.

Finding Opponents - This is not as big of an issue as it was when I first tried the service early last year. They have not yet reached the critical mass that would have players online 24 -7. This might be more a problem for those who keep hours that are a bit different from the average person is the (-8 to -5 GMT time zones). There is a calendar that lists events and anyone may post on it to let others know when they will be playing a specific game.

Overall I give GTO thumbs up and I look forward to playing there throughout 2005
