Party Games or Games at Parties? (05/14/2005)

Very often a party fails because there is very little mingling. It might be that people are shy or have little in common to talk about leading to boredom. This is where games come into the party to engage your guests that need something to do. You could of course use an old standby like charades or one of the modern Party Games like Balderdash or Taboo. You can also go with games that are not traditionally played at parties; there are several factors to take into consideration.

How long it takes to learn - Don’t loose them before the game starts. As the host you should be able to teach newcomers how to play in 15 min or less without going to the rulebook over and over. This means if it the first time you are playing read the rules several times and even set up the board and other equipment so you know how to do it and to make sure it came with everything.

Length of the game - This will depend on the group you are entertaining, in most cases 1 hour or less is best.

Number of players - A game that supports 8 players is better than one for 4. Remember parties are social gatherings and the more people in the game the more interaction there will be.

Ease of play - Most people go to parties to unwind and have fun. If the game is too challenging the fun could be lost. On the other hand if it is too easy they might be bored. The best solution for this problem is knowing your guests.

Subject matter - Be sure that the game is appropriate for all ages that attend, even if they are not playing young ones do remember everything they see and hear. Regardless of age make sure that no one will be offended.

Freshness - Not you the games, ok you need to bathe before everyone arrives but if your game has been overplayed it will stink too. Introduce a new game once and awhile.

!!!!!Warning!!!!!! Parties are messy; food and drinks can and will get spilled. If you can’t stand the idea of your game being stained better not play it at a party.

You could of course plan your party around gaming. A group of my friends has a monthly game party that rotates between their various houses with everyone taking a turn. These are not kids parties and are much like a cocktail party with everyone bringing a dish and drinks to share. The only difference is that once everyone has arrived, had time to graze the buffet and get a drink we sit down to play games with a short break for more food and drinks in between games. Games that are popular with this group include Pit, Apples to Apples and Dancing Dice. These gatherings are very popular and anticipated with much enthusiasm.

Now that you know what to do you’ll be having parties that people will be asking to be invited too.

Penguicon 3.0 - Report (04/25/2005)

We made it back yesterday evening but did not have the time or the energy to put this post up. First of all I would like to apologize for the scheduling mistake on Sunday just in case you are one of the people who wanted to participate in the play testing we had planned that afternoon and missed it. Otherwise the entire weekend went off without a hitch. Although the Star Wars Celebration might have taken many Sci-Fi fans away this year the gamers showed up in force. Beside ourselves representatives from Black and White Games, Looney Labs, Mayfair Games, Steve Jackson Games and Palladium Publishing ran events. The 24-hour game room was never empty the entire weekend! We enjoyed it all so much that we have already started talking about next year.

Hope to see you there.
